Historic Facts about Tin Punching
The tradition of Mexican tin art, known as hojalata (pronounced Ho-huh-lah-tuh), dates back to the 1500s. Historically, artisans would repurpose scraps of tin to create beautiful designs by cutting, punching, and scoring the metal. Often, the tin would be painted with vibrant lacquer, giving it bright, eye-catching colors. This process continues to be a celebrated art form in Mexico, blending practicality with creativity and cultural expression.
